Jewelry Care Guide

At Kimberfire, we are pleased to offer custom jewelry in a variety of different metals. Whether adorned in gold or platinum, it is imperative to understand how to appropriately care for your pieces to ensure they last a lifetime.

Each metal and gemstone wears differently, and knowing how to properly care for each is key in keeping your pieces looking fresh for many years to come. If you are unsure if your jewelry is 14k or 18k white/yellow gold or platinum, all Kimberfire pieces are stamped with a quality mark (you may have to search for it, but it’s there!). Stamps for rings will be on the inside of the band.

As a general rule of thumb for rings in all metals, it is extremely important that you remove your rings when doing any heavy lifting or operating machinery. Anything from lifting weights, to lifting a piece of furniture you want to move can warp the metal while on your finger - and the consequences are less than ideal. To be safe we also recommend removing your jewelry prior to sleeping, exercise and sports, washing dishes, gardening, showering or bathing, and swimming.

Caring for 14k or 18k Yellow Gold

Both 14k and 18k yellow gold are durable enough for everyday wear, and there is no plating on these metals like what is typically found on white gold. As these metals are not plated, their appearance remains consistent over time. While the colour remains unchanged, regular wear and tear will likely result in visible markings. To maintain the item's original luster, we recommend bringing your ring in for a polish - a complimentary annual service for all Kimberfire pieces.

Caring for 14k or 18k White Gold

Similar in durability to their yellow gold counterparts, 14k and 18k white gold differ in their alloy composition and that they require a rhodium plating to achieve their bright white appearance. Over time, this coating wears off with regular use, and your white gold may start to show some yellow tones. Fear not, as Kimberfire offers complimentary rhodium plating alongside your annual polish to restore your jewelry's bright, white shine.

Caring for Platinum

Considered one of the strongest metals for jewelry, platinum ensures longevity for generations to come. Though technically softer than 14k and 18k gold, platinum does not scratch off during wear - rather, it displaces, resulting in a uniform patina with an almost antique finish. Ready to bring back the shine? Bring it to the Kimberfire office for your complimentary annual polishing.

Diamond and Gemstone Care

As centre stones can be loosened by accidental impact, we recommend regularly checking that yours is secure. This is as easy as holding your item between your pointer and middle fingers and giving it a gentle tap with your index finger, while placed by your ear. If you hear any clicking or rattling sound while doing this, refrain from wearing the item until you can have it inspected by us.

Cleaning Your Jewelry at Home

  1. Fill a small bowl with warm water
  2. Add a small amount of dish soap
  3. Place your jewelry into the soapy water and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes
  4. Gently work a soft-bristled toothbrush (unused!) into any gaps in the setting and around diamonds and/or gemstones
  5. Rinse and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
  6. Enjoy your sparkling jewelry!

If you have an ultrasonic cleaner at home then this is a great way to keep your jewelry looking fresh. Please note though that not all stones are able to go into an ultrasonic. If you're in doubt, please contact us and we'll let you know.
